The Northwest Tribal Emergency Management Council (NWTEMC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established in 2004 as a consortium of tribes in the Northwest region of Washington State. Its primary goal is to assist tribes in participating in homeland security and emergency management preparedness efforts. The NWTEMC serves tribes in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska, providing information sharing and solidarity in dealing with homeland security, emergency management, and public health issues that affect Native Nations.
The NWTEMC is committed to maintaining tribal sovereignty and helping tribal partners build infrastructure and internal capacity. Unlike other emergency management and homeland security groups, the NWTEMC and its national counterpart, the National Tribal Emergency Management Council (NTEMC), prioritize empowering tribal nations to take the lead in their own incidents. They achieve this through information sharing, training, resource allocation, and promoting best practices. The NWTEMC believes that public safety and public health are trust responsibilities of the federal government and does not charge for its services.
