The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee was chartered in 1944 and is responsible for the construction, management and provision of affordable housing with services that enhance residents' self-sufficiency. It manages more than 4,400 low-income housing units that are subsidized by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and administers over 5,200 Section 8 vouchers. The housing authority also owns and manages more than 960 units of affordable housing and nearly 63 market-rate rental housing units. It also inspects privately owned housing units for rent assistance contracts.
