Named after the 40th president of the United States of America, the Reagan National Airport or RNA which is the airport abbreviation, is a three-level one million square foot facility with three runways. It is one of the busiest airports in Washington DC, primarily because it lies just minutes away from downtown Washington. The large airport facility was built in 1941 and initially had four runways; however, one was shut down in 1956 to create space for taxing and aircraft parking. The Ronald Reagan national airport, also known as just Washington national airport, receives a lot of traffic, which is why passengers using the facility are asked to check-in as early as possible.
